Bedtime stories by age
The right bedtime story for a toddler isn't the right one for an 11-year-old.
Some general pointers for choosing a bedtime story at each age, and what Dreamie does with the age you pick. Every child is different, so treat these as starting points rather than rules.
What Dreamie does with your child's age
You choose an age from under 1 to 12. Dreamie asks for a story written for a child of that age — soothing rhythm and repetition for babies, simple words for toddlers, a fuller plot for older children — nothing frightening and a calm ending. You choose the length yourself: short (about 3–5 minutes), standard (5–8) or long (8–12).
Under 1 and age 1: rhythm and sound
For babies the story is really for you to read aloud: short sentences, gentle repetition and soft sounds. Your voice matters more than the plot.
Ages 2 and 3: short and simple
Many parents find the youngest listeners enjoy short stories about familiar things: a teddy, the moon, a dog, bath time. The short length is a good place to start.
Ages 4 and 5: a small adventure
Around preschool age, many children like a story with a small, low-stakes problem and a warm ending. Picking their own interests, like dinosaurs or space, gives the story a familiar setting.
Ages 6 to 8: longer stories and chapters
Older children often enjoy longer stories. If you save a story to your free library, you can continue it as a next chapter another night; Dreamie uses only the story you saved.
Ages 9 to 12: a real plot, still calm
Older children often want a story that doesn't feel babyish: richer words, characters with feelings and a proper plot. Dreamie keeps it calm and suitable for bedtime.
What stays the same at every age
A first name or nickname is enough; we never ask for a photo, surname or birthday.
Not sure which length to choose?
Start short. If your child asks for more, try the standard length next time. You always see the reading time before the story starts.
