Bedtime ritual
A small ritual around tonight's story
Many families find a familiar routine makes bedtime feel calmer. Here is a simple one to try โ adapt it to your child; there's no right way.
When you read aloud
- Put your phone away for 15 to 20 minutes.
- Settle somewhere comfortable together.
- Say out loud: this is our own moment now.
- Read slowly, with warmth in your voice.
- Pause properly between paragraphs.
- After the story, ask one gentle question.
- Give the answer room, even if it takes a while.
When you listen together
- Put your phone face down and turn off notifications.
- Find a spot where you can both sit or lie comfortably.
- Start the narrator and let the story do its work.
- When it ends, don't say anything straight away. Let the quiet linger.
- Then ask: how did that feel? And really listen to the answer.
Listening to your child afterwards
- Your child may want to say more than you expect. Leave room for silence, thoughts and questions.
- Try not to fill in or correct. This is their time to feel seen.
- A three-word answer is still an answer. Nod and wait.
- Sometimes repeat what your child said, word for word. That alone can feel like being heard.
Gentle questions to choose from
- What was your favourite part?
- How do you think the hero felt at the end?
- What would you have done?
- Was there a bit that reminded you of you?
